CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Northeast Ohio biotech company and Purdue University researchers didn’t intend to develop a rapid diagnostic test for the coronavirus and other pathogens when they began working together earlier this year. The two partners were focused on another issue before the pandemic struck: food safety. IdentifySensors Biologics, of Shaker Heights, was founded on technology developed by its parent company to detect spoilage and pathogens in food. Early this year, the company teamed up with Purdue researchers to develop a way to test fruits and vegetables for pathogens like E. coli, listeria and salmonella, founder and CEO Dr. Gregory Hummer said.

But when the coronavirus pandemic struck, the two partners realized they could adapt the technology to test for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Now they think the technology could be the wave of the future, allowing someone to test themselves at home and have results sent to their smartphone within 30 minutes.
